Visio and VBA — PART – II – AuthorKen Getz and Mike Gilbert

Visio

Although it may seem daunting to have to learn a new programming environment (and really, it’s very simple – Intellisense, as you’ll see, makes
all the difference), once you learn Visio’s development environment, you’re going to be comfortable in any application that hosts VBA. Because all the keystrokes, the tools, and the language are all the same, it takes little
time to get going in a new environment.

As you know, things aren’t nearly as rosy as marketing-speak would make them seem. The programming tool is only a small portion of using a new product. The big hurdle is the application’s object model. There’s no substitute for digging in and learning how an application works, as well. These two issues: the object model, and the application’s UI, are crucial for writing applications that work in any environment. Visio is no exception (and perhaps, it’s the rule – its interface is awfully idiosyncratic), so be prepared to dig in and study its object model before and during your
application development. Of course, as you’ll see, IntelliSense will come to the rescue.

Word Completion

This one’s a bit less discoverable, because you must press a special key to make it happen (Ctrl+Space), but it makes typing much faster. Once you enter enough characters to uniquely identify an object or keyword, you can simply press Ctrl+Space and have VBA provide the rest. If the choice
is ambiguous, it’ll drop down the list as shown in List Properties/Methods illustration above. Otherwise, it completes your word for you. For example, if you type “Msg” and then press Ctrl+Space, it’ll fill in the “Box” (giving you “MsgBox”, of course) automatically.

Two’s Better Than One

Unlike Visual Basic 3 and 4, VBA supports multiple projects open in the VBA environment. This allows you to work on multiple-document applications and add-ins, without having to load two separate copies of VBA. In addition, this makes it possible to drag and drop forms, modules, and class modules between projects. No more importing! Just open both projects, and drag the modules where you need them.

Drag ‘n’ Drop Code

Want to move a procedure from one module to another? Need to copy a chunk of code to another procedure? Either of these tasks can be accomplished using drag and drop in the VBA editor.

Don’t Lose Your Place

All to often, you want to leave your current location, go somewhere else in the code, and then return to your previous location. To make this easy, VBA supports bookmarks. You can toggle a bookmark, move to the next or previous bookmark, or remove all bookmarks from the Edit toolbar.

References are Everything

In order to allow you to code to objects outside the current host application, most ActiveX components that can be controlled provide a type library. This file (normally with a TLB extension) provides information for ActiveX components that need to use the functionality exposed by the server component. The type library contains information about constants, using the help file associated with the application to find out about its objects, as well as information about the methods, and properties of the objects. In order to use this information, however, you’ve got to tell VBA where to find it. To do so, you’ll use the Tools > References dialog,
shown below.

Creating Objects

Once you’ve created the necessary references, you can use code like the following to instantiate variables that point to the different objects:

Dim oExcel As Excel.ApplicationLater, when you need to use the Excel Application object, you can use code like this:

Set oExcel = New Excel.Application Finally, when you’re finished using oExcel, make sure and set it to Nothing, thereby releasing the reference count and allowing Windows to remove the object from memory:

Set oExcel = Nothing You can also create and instantiate the variable at the
same time:

Dim oExcel As New Excel.Application This isn’t recommended, however, because you have no control over the time at which the application gets started. By explicitly assigning the variable to be a new instance of the application when you need it, you maintain control over when (and if) the object comes to life. This technique is called “early binding”, because VBA can look up the properties and methods of your object at compile
time.

Note: Multiple ActiveX components expose objects with the same name. For example, both Excel and Visio expose a Cell object. In your code, within Visio, you can refer to a Cell object, and its use will be unequivocal. If you then take the same code and run it in Excel (and you should be able
to do this), it will fail. Excel will think you’re referring to its Cell object, and your code will not do what you’d like. To avoid this problem, always provide complete object references in your code. That is, always include
the application name (as in Visio.Cell, or Excel.Cell) in any object declaration.

Early vs. Late Binding

You may find that some applications don’t allow you to create variables that refer to specific objects within their type libraries—Schedule+ 95 was one such ActiveX server component. In that case, you’ll have to write
code something like this:

Dim oBad As Object

Set oBad = CreateObject(“BadApp.Application”)

This technique causes your code to run much slower than it might otherwise, however. Because VBA can’t look up, and bind to, the methods and properties of your object until run time, and it must do so each and every time you run your application, you pay a stiff performance penalty.
This technique, known as “late binding,” causes your code to run slower, and should be avoided if possible.

Note: You can use CreateObject in early binding scenarios, as well. It gives you the most explicit control over when your objects come into being. You’ll want to investigate the GetObject function, as well, which attempts to retrieve a reference to an existing object in memory, as opposed to starting a new instance of the application.

Object Browser

The Object Browser (press F2 to get it started) allows you to investigate the objects, constants, methods, and properties of all the applications for which you’ve set a reference (using the Tools > References dialog), and for all the ActiveX controls you’ve added to your project. Image below shows the Object Browser in use.

You can peruse the objects in the browser, working through objects in the left pane, to the objects, methods and properties of the selected object on the right. Working from left to right, and back over to the left again, you can investigate the hierarchy of objects which makes up the object model of any application.

Surgery Through a Straw

OK, so it’s not so bad any more. Debugging in early versions of Visual Basic always seemed as productive as performing major surgery through a hole the size of a straw. Things have improved a bit, and VBA supports the full complement of break points, watch points, conditional watch points, and the wonderful Quick Info tips. The Locals window (shown below), allows you to view all the variables that are currently in scope, as you’re debugging your code

One useful tip: you can alter the value of any simple variable, from the Locals window. Simply select the Value column, and enter a new value. If you’re debugging and want to modify the value of a variable, this is certainly a convenient way to do it.

Strong and Happy Life with Dating

There is a saying the men are from the planet mars and women are from the venus . Its true that most of the cases both men and women find it difficult to understand each other. Men find it very difficult to understand about what females are thinking in their heart. Women also sometimes find it difficult to understand men. You may think both are human beings so what’s the difficulty in understanding?

After a deep research and study it says there is always a fundamental difference with the way that a man and a woman think about a Man. If you deeply study both sexes you might find that men think more logically than
women. A woman thinking will be attached more to the emotions. A proper dating will help lot of people to gain confidence with their partner, to know about each other likes, dislikes, how do they communicate each and every minute information can be gathered. This will strengthen their relationship
and importantly the understanding between each other. Dating plays an important role on deciding a partner.

Dating Importance

Nowadays Males around the age of 18-30 give more respect and importance to the dating process, as it is very necessary for individuals to select the partner and find out their likes, dislikes, their attitude etc and get a better understanding. Previously people definitely don’t respect this kind of dating because with the view that it may spoil their culture etc. Now it has been slowly changing, people feel the importance of dating.

Most of the arranged marriages or even love marriages become a failure because of misunderstandings, they fail to spend time before marriage, and they failed to understand each other. This is the reason why lot of marriages became a failure. To avoid this kind of things Dating is very very important for the society. Most of the women are complex when it comes to relationship with a male, So every female has to think about dating to know each other because women will feel later if she has found a wrong man for her life. This is why I recommend both male and female to have a proper dating before marriage

Necessity of buying a Flood Insurance for your home

Before reading this article, let me clear you a point, I have written this article just for your information, I don’t have a product/service of any kind to sell through this article.
Flood insurance is a must for a family who owns a property let me clearly explain it in this article. You are either going to buy a house or planning to buy a house flood insurance is a must if you live in a Low lying area or anywhere near to the lake. For the people living in these types of areas are advised to take a long term flood insurance that will help you a lot. Flood is the most commonly affected natural calamity, taking protection against a flood is really an important decision if you have a property. Rather than blaming the government for your losses it’s better to get flood insurance in your hand, which can cover your losses occurred due to flood.
Flood can because you lot of things, we cannot predict exactly when it will hit you, and it was happened in my life when I went out for just 30-minute floods came inside my home and destroyed all my computers, laptops, television everything has gone. Luckily, I have insurance to restore everything at no cost , if not I would be paying a heavy amount from my pocket.

Selecting a good flood insurance company

The first step before getting insurance, is to call the insurance agents and explain your needs to what amount of money you want to get the coverage and ask the agent how to lower the premium amount and get the flood insurance. A good agent will certainly suggest you a suitable policy package which accommodates your needs. Approaching an agent who is dealing with a reliable insurance company will be a good option.

What is VBA, anyway?

VBA: “Freedom from the tyranny of idiosyncratic macro languages” Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), is a cross-product programming language and environment. The current version (5.0) appeared first in Microsoft Office 97, and has been licensed by over 50 software vendors throughout the world. Because the product includes both the language engine and the integrated development environment (and Microsoft forms, as well), using it in one product “feels” the same as using it in another. Figure 1 shows the VBA environment (started from Microsoft Word) in use.

Visio was the prime company, outside Microsoft, to completely incorporate the VBA 5.0 development environment and programming language into an off-the-shelf application. By adding this standard programming language/environment, the millions of Microsoft Office 97 users can realize immediately at home in the Visio development environment, because they’re one and the same.

The VBA development environment.

One exception: because of the architecture of Microsoft Access, this one product was unable to switch to the complete VBA 5.0 IDE. All of the information presented here applies to Access, with the exception of the section covering Microsoft Forms. Access’ native forms are more powerful than the modal dialog boxes available as part of Microsoft Forms, so the Access team kept their own forms in that one product.

One more: Outlook 97 includes VB Script, not VBA. Future versions of Outlook should include the full VBA product. Deadlines are deadlines.

When VB? When VBA?

There’s a thriving development community, writing add-ins for Visio in Visual Basic. Now, Visio’s “upped the ante”: they’ve included the programming language in the box. How does this affect you, if you’re currently providing add-ins or tools for Visio in Visual Basic?

Think Ragu®

If you haven’t got a copy of Visual Basic, now you don’t need one in order to write Visio applications and add-ins. The language and programming environment come with the product, so everything you need is there, in one place.

Conjoined Twins, if you will

No matter how you worked it out, calling Visual Basic applications from Visio caused your add-in to run in a separate process, and a separate memory space, than Visio itself. Working this way can be quite slow. VBA runs in the same process as its host, so you no longer pay the penalty of working in a separate process.

A Very Tight Mix

Because VBA integrates directly with Visio, in its memory space, it can communicate much more closely with the running VBA code than it could with your Visual Basic add-ins. For example, it’s now easy to attach code
to events of documents and shapes.

Distributing the Goods

As a by-product of the way Visio stores your VBA code, the code always exists as part of a Visio document. That way, the code “lives” with your drawing. There’s never an issue, worrying whether the user has installed
your add-in or tool – it’s always there!

Never Travel without Protection

Some skeptics will complain: they used to be able to hide their code by compiling it into VB or C executables. How will they be able to keep users out of their code, if it’s right there in the drawings? The answer is code protection. You can password-protect your code, so only developers who
know the password can get in and muck with it. Check out the Tools|Project Properties|Protection menu item for more information.

The Big Event

Because VBA is so tightly tied in with Visio, it’s really easy to attach code to events as they occur. For example, if you wanted to ensure that every shape dropped onto your document included some text, you might write code
like this:

Private Sub Document_ShapeAdded(ByVal Shape As Visio.IVShape)

With Shape.Characters

If .CharCount = 0 Then

.Text = “Visio Rules!”

End If

End With

End Sub

This way, every time a user drops a shape onto the document, Visio calls this chunk of VBA code, passing in a reference to the shape that was just dropped. You can use that reference in order to work with the shape, programmatically .

Look What You Get For Free!

Because VBA is tightly integrated with its host, whether the host is Visio, Excel, or any other product, your code always knows its context. Therefore, although Visio provides an Application object, you needn’t worry about it,
if you’re writing code in a Visio VBA project. In addition, all the active objects have built-in references. For example, ActiveDocument, ActivePage, and ActiveWindow are all ready for you to use in your solutions. It’s easy to grab the object you need and start programming!

One at a Time, Please

For better or for worse, because each application hosts VBA in its own process space, if you run multiple applications that host VBA concurrently, you’ll end up with multiple VBA sessions. Therefore, if you’re running Visio and Excel, and press Alt-F11 in each (that’s the magic key that brings up the VBA environment), you’ll end up with two copies of VBA running. Is this a good thing? You’ll have to decide for yourself. It’s just the way it is.

It’s Modal or Nothing

Microsoft Forms (the forms that are available as part of VBA) are modal. Period. (At least, in this version of VBA – we’re hoping for some sanity in a future version.) This does mean, of course, that some types of wizards and

add-ins will still need to be written in Visual Basic, or other languages. If you want your form to interact with a user’s drawing, allowing the user to switch back and forth, you’re out of luck if you want to use Microsoft Forms to build your interface.
